Background of the Study

Peer mentorship programs have been identified as valuable tools in enhancing academic performance and student well-being in various educational settings. In nursing education, peer mentorship has the potential to bridge the gap between theory and practice, fostering a supportive learning environment where students can gain both academic and emotional support. Kaduna State University, a leading institution for nursing education, recognizes the importance of such programs in helping students navigate the complexities of their academic journey.

Peer mentorship involves a relationship where more experienced students (mentors) guide and support their less experienced peers (mentees), providing advice on academic challenges, clinical experiences, and personal development. In nursing programs, peer mentorship can significantly impact academic performance by offering assistance with course materials, promoting effective study habits, and providing emotional support during stressful periods. Furthermore, peer mentors, who have recently gone through similar challenges, may offer valuable insights and encouragement to mentees, fostering a sense of community and belonging among students.

Existing literature indicates that peer mentorship not only improves academic outcomes but also enhances students' social integration and psychological well-being. In nursing programs, where the demands of the curriculum are high, mentorship programs can reduce stress and anxiety while helping students better understand their coursework and clinical expectations. Peer mentorship, therefore, plays an essential role in the academic success of nursing students.

Despite its recognized benefits, the extent to which peer mentorship programs are effective in improving academic performance among nursing students in Kaduna State University remains unclear. This study aims to assess the role of peer mentorship programs in improving nursing students' academic performance, providing insights into their impact on student success.

Statement of the Problem

Peer mentorship programs have gained widespread recognition in nursing education, but their effectiveness in improving academic performance remains underexplored, particularly in Nigerian institutions. Kaduna State University has implemented a peer mentorship program, but the extent to which it positively influences students' academic outcomes has not been thoroughly evaluated. As academic performance is a critical indicator of students' readiness for professional practice, it is essential to understand whether peer mentorship can significantly impact academic achievement, especially in nursing programs where the academic workload is intense and multifaceted.

Many nursing students struggle with the transition from theoretical learning to clinical practice, and the pressures of meeting academic expectations can lead to stress and reduced performance. While peer mentorship programs are designed to alleviate these challenges, there is limited empirical evidence documenting their success in enhancing academic performance in the Nigerian context. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the role of peer mentorship in improving the academic performance of nursing students at Kaduna State University.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of peer mentorship programs in improving the academic performance of nursing students at Kaduna State University.

2. To identify the specific benefits of peer mentorship programs in nursing education.

3. To recommend strategies for optimizing peer mentorship programs to enhance student academic success.

Research Questions

1. How effective are peer mentorship programs in improving the academic performance of nursing students at Kaduna State University?

2. What are the specific benefits of peer mentorship programs for nursing students?

3. What strategies can be implemented to optimize the peer mentorship program in nursing education?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant positive relationship between participation in peer mentorship programs and the academic performance of nursing students.

2. Peer mentorship programs significantly reduce academic stress and anxiety among nursing students.

3. Nursing students who participate in peer mentorship programs perform better in both theoretical and practical assessments.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Kaduna State University, with an emphasis on evaluating the peer mentorship program and its effect on academic performance. The study may be limited by the availability of willing participants, as well as the subjective nature of self-reported academic performance. Furthermore, factors such as individual learning styles, personal motivation, and external influences may affect the outcomes but will not be the primary focus of the study.

Definitions of Terms
